COMES IN UNEXPECTED FORMS

For me, it tends to come from the small, ordinary everyday activities. Recently, none of the places I have found inspiration for my book in progress have been particularly glamorous.

But they work.

A tidy desk. It's not the most exciting form of inspiration but it certainly works for me. A clear desk or workspace provides a clear mind. That space allows creativity to flow more easily. Nothing mind-blowing, just a simple reordering, maybe a little music, and you're good to refocus.

The works of others. All writers suffer from writer's block at some point or another. When I get stuck, I turn to the writers that I love for inspiration. Reading the works of others helps to tap into the creative side of your brain that refuses to work when you're sitting at your desk, pen in hand. I reckon that you can't expect to be a good writer without being an avid reader.

A walk. Even just a 20 minute walk is enough to clear your mind and reignite your muse. Whether it's a quick jot to the shops, a luxurious stroll in the woods, or a dander through bustling city streets, every new location has a flavour to it. The movement and change of scene are often exactly what your story might need. It's hard not to return without a clear mind.

A cosy night in. No plans. A wee drink or cup of tea. A good book or a classic movie. Our brains work non-stop, keeping us going and they get tired and overloaded. Giving your mind a well-earned break is often precisely what your creativity needs to flourish. So, get cosy and relax. Your next novel will thank you.
